This is the writing of a pastor in small town America. I will write about life from that perspective, deal with issues, politics, Christ-like living and marriage and family. All of these and more will be under-girded with scripture and Biblical wisdom.

What Will You Find this Christmas?
What Will
You Find this Christmas?
By: Dr.
Jeff Fuller
What
do you want for Christmas this year? If
I were to ask the kids, we would probably get a wide variety of answers. It's not like some of the previous years
where there was some "super gift" that every kid wanted (like Wii’s
and Xbox). It's all up for grabs this
year.
I
am told there was a little boy who wanted a watch really badly and kept on
asking his parents to give him one for Christmas. Every time they would hear him talk, he would
ask about this watch. Finally they said, "Look, just stop talking about
this watch . . . we know what you want for Christmas . . . don't talk about it
any more.” Later that night at dinner
his parents asked him if he would like to pray out loud before the meal. He said, "Sure, but before I pray I
would like to read a Bible verse." He turned to Mark 13:37, and read:
"I sayeth unto you that which I've said before, WATCH!" Interesting use of scripture, there!
We
spend most of our time searching in the holiday season. We spend time searching for the perfect gift,
searching for the right bargain, searching for the perfect decorations for our
house, searching for the right parking spots.
It is interesting to remember that at the first Christmas, a lot of
people really missed the significance-they missed out on the blessing-because
they were not searching for it.
The
politicians missed it. The people in the
business community missed it (the innkeeper).
The people in the religious establishment missed it. Why, you ask?
They were searching for something else at that time. The only people who
really were blessed were the people who were searching for it. The angels went to the shepherds and gave
them the news. The shepherds said,
"Let's go to Jerusalem and find this Jesus." The Wise Men saw the star and said
"let's go look for this Jesus."
And in seeking Him they found Him.
What
are you going to find this Christmas in your own life? It depends on what you're searching for! The Bible says, "Seek and you will
find." That which you are seeking
for is what you are going to find.
Thankfully,
in our society today, there is increasing interest in seeking for spiritual
truth. It's been a trend for a few years now. We see evidence of this in many
places. People are searching for answers to the spiritual questions of life. We
see this evidenced in the television shows that have spiritual themes, in
movies, even in news magazines like Time and Newsweek, which have cover stories
about spiritual things. This never used to be the case-but it's the case
increasingly today.
In
the past we have seen cover stories like "Is There Life After Death?"
or "A Clear View of Heaven" or "Who was Jesus?" And they don't put these stories on the
covers of their magazines unless they're going to sell magazines. They sell because people are interested in
those things.
Newsweek
Magazine did a cover story not long ago called "The Search for the
Sacred." The author said,
"Maybe
it's just a critical mass of baby boomers in the contemplative afternoon of
life. Or maybe it's just general dissatisfaction of materialism in the modern
world. Whatever the reason, millions of Americans are embarking on a search for
the sacred in their lives." People are asking these questions: Is there
meaning in my life? Does my life count? How can I come to know God? That's what
Christmas is all about-seeking God.
As
the article progresses, the authors write:
"A
lot has changed in the last half century. We stripped away what once our
ancestors saw as essential-the importance of religion and the family-and people
feel that they want something that they've lost. They just don't remember what it is that
they've lost. That, in essence, is the
seekers quest…to fill the hole with a new source of meaning -- why are we
here? What is the purpose of our
existence?"
I
would imagine, if we were honest, probably every one of us has asked some of
those searching questions this past year, in some of the more quiet moments of
our lives. If you have not made the
commitment to Christ, there is still that hunger, that search, and when there
are moments of quiet and our lives slow down and we can think about these
things, you are finding questions like:
What's
the purpose of life?
Why
am I getting up this morning?
What
is it that I'm here for?
How
can I come to know God?
Is
there a God?
Those
questions, I believe, are implanted in our consciousness because we have this
innate need to be intimately connected and intimately related to God. If that's not in place, there is that
'hunger'- that sense of need-that sense of emptiness, and there is no better
time than Christmas to respond to those questions by actually seeking it out.
This
Christmas, God wants to give you three Christmas gifts. The Bible says, "You will seek me and
find me, if you seek me with all of your heart." If you are seeking after it we will find
peace of mind. You will find forgiveness if you seek after it. You will find renewal for your faith if you
seek after it. These are Christmas gifts
that you can find if you seek after them.
Three
very wonderful presents that the Father wants to give you this season, which
will carry you into and through the New Year: Peace of Mind, Forgiveness of
Sin, and Renewal of Faith. Wonderful
presents I pray you find this Christmas Season!
Merry Christmas from the Fuller
Family!

Received by Email on December 1, 2012
Dear Jeff,
I wanted to drop you an email to say that I have been
thinking about you over the last few weeks.
My prayers have been for you in these days, and I have also been praying
for the family and your church congregation as well. If there is anything I can do, feel free to
call on me.
We are extremely busy
up here at the North Pole. The Elf’s are
all running around like chickens with their heads cut off, if you know what I
mean. The list is being checked and
double checked and triple checked as we see who has been naughty or nice. We are now working around the clock, as
shipments are arriving hourly, from around the world. The Workshop is humming along, and that
little problem with the doll line was repaired before the sun set. Deadlines are being established, as we
prepare for the Big Guy to get his one night of travel over with and we hope
that he is able to do it before the sun comes up on the 25th.
So much planning and so little time to get it done! Yet, we enjoy nothing more than seeing
children happy and smiling on Christmas morning. Oh, the letters we receive in March, as we
all return from the Alps . My desk is overflowing with letters of
gratitude from children around the world.
But as you know, we all celebrate Christmas, not for the
gifts and to worship Santa. Even this
morning in a meeting with Santa, he reminded us that this is the season to
remember the greatest gift given to man, Jesus born in a manger in Bethlehem ’s
stable. That is the Reason for the
Season!
Keep on reminding the people there in Coosa County , that
Jesus is what is most important at this time of the year, no at every day of
the year. Thanks for sharing Jesus, and
thanks for being such a dear friend to me.
God bless and Merry Christmas!

Elwood the Elf
I
have a friend, who lives at the North Pole and works for the big jolly man
himself, St. Nick. His name is
Elwood. He is an elf, Chief of the Elf’s
(the COE is what they call him at Santaland), with an office directly across
the hall from the wife of St. Nick and next door to Ernest, Chief of Production
(the COP of Santaland-not to be confused with Citizens on Patrol, which is our
version of COP).
Elwood
stands a little taller than five feet, which is large for what an Elf actually
measures in height. He has a reddish
complexion, a touch of gray hair, and big, brown eyes that seem to draw you
into a conversation with him as he smiles and nods, making little notes on a
TouchPad. Four months out of the year,
September through December, he wears a red and white suit, with a Santa tie, as
he wonders around Santaland checking on all of the work going into the last
minute production of toys, games, clothes and candies for all of the good boys
and girls around the world.
My
friend spends the first two months of the year taking it easy. He has a condo in the Florida Keys and a
cabin in Gatlinburg. January is spent in
Gatlinburg; February he lazes around the pool in the warm sun on the coast of
Florida. (Actually it was in Florida where I met Elwood-I’ll have to tell you
that story at another time)
March
he heads back for a high-level meeting with St. Nick, Earnest and several of
the other top dogs from Santaland, at a swanky little resort in the Alps, which
Santa inherited from some long lost relative, who owned a toy company which he
sold to Mattel.
After
two weeks in the Alps, Elwood and all the elves go into high gear as they begin
taking notice of who is naughty or nice; going through complaints from those
who write or email about some small problem they may have had with the gift
they received; and producing new and exciting toys, games and even candies.
Needless to say Elwood is an
extremely busy man, but since we are friends, I have his phone number and we
talk through out the year.
We talked by phone today and he
was asking about the kids in our area.
He knows that since my Savannah is ten years old and as pastor of the
county seat church, I have a keen knowledge of the children in our area.
“Do you know this kid,” Elwood
asked, “that goes by the initials S.T., lives up in the Goodwater area? He wants some pretty big stuff this year.”
“I am not sure who he is but
I’ll see what I can find out,” I replied.
“While we are talking, there
are several kids I have not heard from yet,” Elwood says as I hear him turning
pages in a notebook. “I’ve yet to
receive letters from the McCain children, the McDonald grandchildren and there
is one here named Journey, who lives in the Hanover area. Jumping beetles, even Savannah has not sent a
letter to the North Pole yet. Jeff,
what’s up?”
“Savannah has not sent a letter yet, but I
reminded her the other day that she needs to write soon. What is the cut-off date?” I asked hoping that we still had a little
time.
“December the 15th
is the day all letters need to be in the Post Office here at the North Pole or
received by email. After that date, we
will have to do what we can. We are
talking about thousands of children around the world who have yet made any
attempt to write Santa. Man, these kids
need to get those letters in as soon as possible. I’m talking yesterday!” Elwood was sounding exhausted.
“Elwood, get a cup of coffee
and settle down,” I said, “It will all work out, my brother.”
“Earnest was in here just a
minute ago,” Elwood said, “And he was trying to get a fix on the list. He said that the whole baby doll line went
down this morning, and they are trying to get it going again. Then Mrs. Claus called, from across the
hall-I mean she could have walked over her, but no she called me and not her
secretary. Said she wants to meet with
me at 1500 hours for a look-see at the list.
If that is not enough, we all have been summoned to the Big Guy’s
Conference Room this evening at 1800 hours for a pre-flight planning meeting
with supper. This means I will miss church
tonight!”
“It sounds busy there, and I am
praying for you…” but I was not going to finish my sentence, as Elwood
interrupted me, and bells and whistles were sounding through the phone.
“Preacher, sorry but I have to
run, something is happening downstairs in the boiler room. Talk to you later…”
With that we were disconnected.

Mrs. America-A Favorite Lady from my past
On Sunday mornings is when I miss
her the most. Even though I have been
through several churches since she was a part of my life, and I have come to
love and cherish several great ladies along the way, she was one of those who
truly placed an imprint on my life.
America Armstrong was a striking
lady, one who always looked as if she had just stepped out of the beauty
shop. She was the daughter of an Italian
emergent named “Valentine” who found his way to America and settled in
Dadeville, Alabama on Lake Martin. Her father
was a businessman, family man and raised two boys and one girl to respect, love
and honor America.
She would smile and light up a
room. She loved her name and was with
much affection called Mrs. America.
I guess that is how she gained an
unusual name. Mrs. America played the
piano for the crowds that would gather in the restaurant in Dadeville. From what I was told, she could rattle the
house and pleased the people.
When I met her, I was the Youth
Minister/Associate Pastor at Dadeville’s First Baptist Church. She became a fast friend and one who stood by
me with her whole heart. She was loud,
vocal and did not mind getting in a conversation. She could hold her own.
Every Sunday morning she played the
piano for the Men’s Sunday School Class, which was located across the hall from
the Nursery in the “Chapel” just inside the north side of the educational wing
and normally they would sing for about ten minutes before starting class. Her Ladies Class, which she attended met
across the hall from the men and all classes started at 9:45.
Each Sunday morning Mrs. America
was fashionably late. She would come
through the doors around five minutes before ten and pass the hall where she
was suppose to go and come down to my office.
No knock, no pausing at the door; she would come right in and announce
that she was in the room:
“Good morning,” she would say
loudly and clearly, “Bro. Jeff, how do you like my dress? I selected it for the men and so the women
could see it.”
She liked bright colors, and
applied them with precise care, matching and accessorizing just right. Even though she was up in years by that time,
she was a beautiful woman, aging with much class and grace. And play the piano-oh, could she ever! I so enjoyed listening to her play. Not only would I stand outside the chapel
door and listen to her play, I would stand beside her as she would play monthly
for our seniors meeting we hosted for the local hospital in our Family Life
Center.
The patriotic songs she played
always thrilled me more than anything.
She would take those fingers, which were swollen with arthritis, and
touch the keys ever so lightly; making it sound as if there were a band inside
those wooden covered harps.
I not only took a liking to her, my
wife also loved her immensely. At that
time we were developing our relationship, as she worked in Alexander City at
Belk’s Department Store. Tina says that
she could be anywhere in the store and know when Mrs. America walked in the
front door. Mrs. America would stop and
call out, “Tina! Where is my Tina?” Tina would hear her and come to meet her at
the door. Then she would spend the next
hour or so helping her select dresses and accessories or giving her advice on
how to winterize her wardrobe.
If Tina had experienced one of
those long difficult days, with no break to eat, America would leave, go home
to Dadeville, prepare food for Tina and return with enough food to feed the
entire crew. But she was stern, “This is
for you and you only; you need to eat, dear.”
As Mrs. America’s health began to
fade, I would stop by to visit with her.
What a joy it was to sit and talk, listening to the stories of her past,
and being assured of her future. She
planned her services, bought the dress she would be buried in from Tina and
Belk’s. She was ready to meet her King
when she left this world.
Of course that was almost twenty
plus years ago now, but I still think about her every Sunday morning. I still see her walking into my office,
twirling around like a school girl and asking for a complaint on her beautiful
attire. She was an amazing woman and
yes, one my favorite ladies who entered my life and left an imprint.

Thanksgiving
Giving thanks should be second nature. Oh, no, not to be taken for granted; but so
common and so easy that in everything you give thanks. That is thanksgiving as second nature.
Thankfulness should be part of our
everyday life. It was in 1863 Abraham
Lincoln proclaimed Thanksgiving a national holiday. With that being the case, it wasn't until
1942 that it was made a legal holiday- the fourth Thursday of every November. It is interesting that both of these moves
came when our nation was in the darkest days of two wars-Civil War and World
War II. The time to think of God and be
thankful is not just in a time of crisis, but as a part of our everyday life.
In the midst of the mundane things of life, it is easy to
overlook the opportunity to give thanks.
No matter if it is a crises of world portions or a small situation at
home, there is something to see as an opportunity to give thanks. A friend with cancer told me that he really
did not have that much to be thankful for, except that he had the pleasure of
seeing another sunrise. That is second
nature thanksgiving.
In an article entitled “Remembering
to Say ‘Thank You’ dated January 17, 2000 the story of Peter Cummings is told
as follows:
“When Peter Cummings was a little
boy, his mother told him how important it was to write thank-you notes. So it
became second nature to him. And when he became chairman of the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra in 1998, he began writing personal notes to anyone
contributing $500 or more to the orchestra.
His habit made news recently. When Mary Webber Parker
donated $50,000 to the orchestra, Cummings sat down and composed a note to her.
Two weeks later, she wrote back and promised another $50,000. Cummings wrote
her again. The upshot of the exchanges was a donation of $500,000 a year for
five years a most generous $2.5 million boon to the arts in Detroit .”
Such a small, little thing as a note of thanks paid off
with great dividends. All of us who have
had have been had someone in our lives who taught life's "little
things." But we tend to lose sight
of them as we grow up, pursue our adult life goals, and focus on life's big
things. We neglect them. Life grows a bit coarser. And we grump about today's
young people and their lack of civility and good manners.
There's nobody to blame but
ourselves. What has happened is we have lost that second nature of
thanksgiving. Therefore we need to quit
pointing fingers at teenagers and scolding our own children or grandchildren.
Instead, pay attention to the little things that collectively compose and
define life. A good beginning point is gratitude.
Make it a point to today to thank
someone for something. Whether a person
you know well or a stranger you are likely never to see again, respond to the
man or woman who renders you a service, helps you with a project, or makes your
world a bit more pleasant with a smile.
Do not do it in hopes of getting a Peter Cummings-like reward for being
considerate or appreciative. Do it simply because it is right.
Does your wife or your husband start
the morning coffee? Do you work for a
good boss or have a loyal assistant? Do
you like the way the laundry does your shirts?
Do the people who service your car do it well? Does your Sunday School
teacher do a good job with the class?
Then say so to that person. Or tell that person's supervisor or his or
her company president about it.
Even if you do nothing more than
smile and nod to someone who holds a door for you or say thanks to the postman
or UPS driver who delivers something to you, that moment of
contact builds community. It affirms
another human being. It connects two people who may never know each other's
names.
Or maybe as with Peter Cummings there will be a reward in
it for you. It could even be something
more valuable than money. You could make a friend or become a partner with God
in nourishing a soul made in his own image.

Can’t Have It Both Ways
Can we agree that abortion is
murder?
First from the biblical account
we must agree that abortion is murder.
The Ten Commandments, recorded for us in the book of Exodus-written by
God on stone tablets given to Moses on the Mt. Sinai (Exodus 19:1 KJV)-the
prohibition. The text reads, “Thou shalt
not kill.” (Exodus 20:13 KJV) Of course
this is the section of the commandments that address the issue of man’s
relationship with man, therefore, I believe that it speaks plainly and
pointedly at the issue of abortion.
Because abortion is murder!
Other places in Holy Writ we
see the dire straights of the issue of murder.
We see with particular interest, what Numbers decrees:
And if he smite him with
an instrument of iron, so that he die, he is a murderer: the murderer
shall surely be put to death. 17 And if he smite him with throwing a
stone, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the murderer
shall surely be put to death. 18 Or if he smite him with an hand
weapon of wood, wherewith he may die, and he die, he is a murderer: the
murderer shall surely be put to death. 19 The revenger of blood
himself shall slay the murderer: when he meeteth him, he shall slay him. 20 But
if he thrust him of hatred, or hurl at him by laying of wait, that he die; 21 Or
in enmity smite him with his hand, that he die: he that smote him shall
surely be put to death; for he is a murderer: the revenger of
blood shall slay the murderer, when he meeteth him.
Numbers 35:16-21 (KJV)
Then there is that most
commonly used phrase, “An eye for an eye,” found in Exodus 21:24, but seldom do
we hear from the preceding verses:
"If men strive, and hurt
a woman with child, so that her fruit depart from her, and yet no
mischief follow: he shall be surely punished, according as the woman's husband
will lay upon him; and he shall pay as the judges determine. 23 And
if any mischief follow, then thou shalt give life for life..."
Ex 21:22-23 (KJV)
Now, there is much more to be
said, and many more verse to cover, but let me get to the heart of the
issue. Abortion is as much murder as any
other sin perpetrated on society. It is
a much so as a man pulling a gun in the ‘hood and killing a ten year old child;
a man sneaking into a crowded theater and opening fire killing and injuring
dozens of people. Abortion is as wrong
as a man getting drunk on a local tavern and driving head-long into a van
loaded with adults. Abortion is murder,
because it is the taking of a life.
Before I formed thee in
the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I
sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.
Jeremiah 1:5 (KJV)
Listen, O isles, unto
me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The Lord
hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention
of my name.
Isaiah 49:1 (KJV)
Some would say the formation of a child in the womb of a
mother is not alive until birth, that there is nothing more than a fetus developing
in the womb as a mass of tissue. But I
beg to differ with you. From research,
and my own humble understanding of the development of a child in the womb of a
mother, that is a child with childlike features growing inside the womb of the
mother. It is taking nourishment,
growing and development personalities and bodily functions as the weeks turn
into months.
Conception-one egg and one
sperm out of hundreds of eggs and millions of sperm unite to create on
embryo. (What a miracle work by God!)
First Trimester-Within the
first four weeks the fetal growth involves the spinal cord, nervous system,
gastrointestinal system, the heart and lungs.
By eight weeks the face is forming, arms and legs are moving, the baby’s
heart begins beating and the brain and other organs form. In 12 weeks the baby grows to 3 inches long
weighing 1 ounce. During this time the
baby begins to move toes and fingers, fingerprints are present, there is smiling,
frowning, sucking, and swallowing. The
baby begins to urinate and the sex of the child can be discerned by this time.
Second Trimester-During the
second three months the baby kicks, can hear and has a strong grip. At 16 weeks there is a strong heartbeat
present and the skin is transparent as fingernails and toenails form on the
tiny little hands and toes. The baby is
now able to rollover in amniotic fluid.
At the 20 weeks mark the heartbeat can be heard with a stethoscope,
there is hair on the head, eyelashes and eyebrows, and the baby can suck the thumb and may have hiccups. At 24 weeks the baby is 11 to 14 inches
weighing 1 to 1 ½ pounds, the skin is covered with a protective coating and the
eyes are open.
Third Trimester-By this time
the baby is very active. At 28 weeks
there is initial breathing and movements, as body fat begins to develop. At 32 weeks the baby will be experiencing
periods of sleep and wakefulness and respond to sounds. During the 36 to 38 week period the baby will
be 19 or more inches long weighing more than 6 pounds and less active. It is during this time the baby will gain
immunities from mother
While the precious life is
growing in the womb of the mother, God is the one forming and shaping that baby
into His purpose, His plan, for that little life. We know not what God has in store for that little
bundle, but we know that God has a plan.
And we know that all
things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called
according to his purpose.
Romans 8:28 (KJV)
Since all of these are true,
then how it that some vow that abortion is the only option for those who do not
want the baby God has planted in the womb.
Sure, there was a man who gave his seed, but friend at that point the
whole process is out of our hands. God
takes the seed, joins it with the egg and begins to form and develop the child
for his pleasing. It is by His hand that
the little body, with legs and arms, adorned with toes and fingers is beginning
to take shape. It a man interrupts that
development and takes away the baby is that not murder-cold bloodied,
premeditated murder?
There are so many other options
available for this child, should the mother not want the child, protected in
the womb. There may be family who would
raise the child, or a young couple in the neighborhood. There are adoption agencies with couples who
would love to have a newborn baby. There
are children’s homes, family ministry, counseling, and so much more to offer,
taking away the potential nightmares that abortion brings to the mother.
A mother
who submits to regular doctors visits will see this growth, this miracle of the
birth process. Through Sonograms,
hearing the heartbeat, and getting an understanding of the process the mother
gains a clear understanding of this wonderful miracle. That mother who immediately thinks that
abortion is the only option misses the most wonderful thing that can ever
happen. They miss the pleasure of
bringing life into the world. Abortion
produces death not life.
For years
advocating the education and acceptance of those who have mental and physical
handicaps, strong disagreements were common.
It is easy to say that since a child is going to knowingly be born as a
Down’s Syndrome child, or other serious, life-long situations, that this is a
serious mistake to bring this child into the world of normal people. May I ask this question: “Who are you to tell
God who do not want a what He planned as special for you?” He planned a child like this for some dear
friends of mine and they would not trade the years they have had with her for
anything. They have loved her and
nurtured her, patiently working with her at home, in educational surroundings
and at church. Now she is in her forty’s
living in a group home and could not be better adjusted than she is now. If they had not had Christian doctors, a
loving family, a strong support system and values that are based on biblical
principles there daughter would have not had the impact she has had on so many
lives.
Someone
strikes a nerve with me when they say abortion is wrong except in the case of
rape, incest, or sexual abuse. Why is
that an exception? Do these situations
nullify the Word of God regarding His design and will of a purpose for an
unborn child? These situations are
unfortunate, unthinkable and a violation of the freedom of a woman, but to pass
that judgment on to an unborn child is reprehensible. Put the offender in jail, lock them away from
society and throw away the key. For the
pregnant female there is counseling and therapy available, there is hope for
recovery and there is a forgiveness from God.
But the baby is innocent and needs to be given all the freedoms that are
afforded him or her. If the mother and
the family do not want to keep the child, then adoption is the best
option. Give life to these children of
such a sorry, sad beginning and let them grow up in a world of love and
acceptance. Allow God to work out His
ultimate good and plan and purpose in that child’s life.
There is a
word here for those who think that abortion is an easy out for a lifestyle of
sexual freedom. This is a choice the
male and female make-yes, it takes “two to tango”-and that choice should be
always to choose not to have sex until marriage. Far too many teenagers think that sex is a wonderful
thing to indulge in; then there is an unwanted pregnancy. The first thing they do is decide that
abortion is the best, only option.
The option
should have been made before the act of sex took place. The option not to have a child by not having
sex should have been the first and only option.
While some think that conceptions are the answer, this is far from the
truth. Contraception’s are not fail
proof, therefore should not be the answer for premarital sex. This applies to the adults as well the
teenagers.
In
conclusion, let us return to the title of this blog. Folks, you can not have it both ways. Abortion in wrong in all cases whether it is
an unwanted pregnancy or rape, incest, or sexual abuse, as God is the master
designer as He creates His masterpiece.
This is a not a black or white issue, a culture issue; this is a moral
issue and it needs to be addressed as such.

Alabama Legislative Compensation Amendment, Amendment 8 (2012)
While there are eleven
amendments on the ballot for the upcoming General Election to be held in Alabama on
November 6, there are two I am currently interested in. These two amendments are very important to
our state and need to be studied and review by every person going to the polls
to vote. In this blog, and upcoming
blogs related to these two amendments be warned, be educated and go vote the
way you see you need to vote.
Today, look at Amendment 8, the
Alabama Legislative Compensation Amendment, Amendment 8 (2012):
An overview
The Alabama Legislative
Compensation Amendment, also known as Amendment 8, is on the November 2012
ballot in the state of Alabama as a
legislatively-referred constitutional amendment. The measure would provide that
the compensation paid to legislators would not increase during term of office.
The measure would also establish the basic compensation of the Legislature at
the median household income in the state and would require legislators to
submit signed vouchers for reimbursement for expenses. The formal title of the proposal is House
Bill 276.
The ballot language that voters
will see on the ballot reads as follows: “Proposing an amendment to the
Constitution of Alabama of 1901, to repeal the existing provisions for
legislative compensation and expenses and establish the basic compensation of
the Legislature at the median household income in Alabama; to require
legislators to submit signed vouchers for reimbursement for expenses; and to
prohibit the Legislature from increasing the compensation or expenses payable
to its members.” (Proposed by Act 2012-269)
You will then be asked to mark, “Yes” or “No.”
This bill is supported and was
sponsored in legislative session was Mike Ball.
There is no defined opposition to the bill as yet identified.
Again, be aware that the path
to the ballot action followed Article XVIII of the Alabama Constitution which
says that it takes a three-fifths (60%) vote of the Alabama State Legislature
to qualify an amendment for the ballot.
Amendment 8 provides that the
compensation paid to legislators do not increase during term of office. This proposed amendment would make
legislative pay relative to Alabama ’s
annual median household income. Furthermore, this amendment supports the idea
of a modest and decent salary to support a Citizen Legislator.
My Opinion
Do you remember March 20, 2007 ? I do and will never forget that day. It was the day that the majority of Senators
of our state voted to increase their salaries by 62%. Some would say that there was nothing wrong
with this, but I say there is, and it is such a travesty, that it is engraved
on my mind forever.
These Senators, many of them
businessman or otherwise employed within the state government at the time, as
part-time representatives of the people, increased their own pay without the
voice of the people. They voted and sent
word to the State Comptroller that they were deserving of a raise that put
their part-time pay as more than a full-time teacher. Without warning to the ones who elected them
to their high ranking position, they said that we were not paying them enough
and they would take care of the issue, vote a raise and go back to doing very
little work to earn that money.
Amazingly these public
officials, employees of the people, told us that they deserved a raise and took
care of the problem they perceived without our assistance. Within days, the rest of our legislators, our
House of Representatives signed on and they too were making more than teachers,
firefighters, and law enforcement officers.
The working man in the state was outraged; and rightly so!
This amendment, which will
appear on the ballot November 6, is a way to make this not happen again. They will not have the right to give
themselves a raise and they will have to be accountable for the expenses as a legislator
of the state. The yearly income will be
the median income of our state. While I
have strong feelings about the fact these part-time employees of our state will
be making as much, or more than the full-time workers in our state government,
this bill gives guidance and instruction of the people to their tendency to act
as Statesman at in issues which they have not right to act.
More to come!
November 6, 2012 General Election: Amendment 6
While there are eleven
amendments on the ballot for the upcoming General Election to be held in
Alabama on November 6, there are two I am currently interested in. These two amendments are very important to
our state and need to be studied and review by every person going to the polls
to vote. In this blog, and upcoming
blogs related to these two amendments be warned, be educated and go vote the
way you see you need to vote.
Today, look at Amendment 6, the
Alabama Health Care Amendment, Amendment 6 (2012):
An overview of the amendment
From www.ballotpedia.org the
following information is found and is helpful in an overview of the bill.
“The Alabama Health Care
Amendment, also known as Amendment 6, will appear on the November 6, 2012
ballot in the state of Alabama as a legislatively-referred constitutional
amendment. The measure, according to the text of the amendment, would prohibit
mandatory participation in any health care system. The formal title of the
proposal is House Bill 60, and was introduced by multiple state representatives
in 2011 state legislative session.”
The synopsis of the bill, as
presented to the Alabama Legislature, reads as follows:
This bill would propose an
amendment to the Constitution of Alabama of 1901, to prohibit any person,
employer, or health care provider from being compelled to participate in any
health care system.
The ballot language of the
proposal reads:
“Proposing an amendment to the
Constitution of Alabama of 1901, to prohibit any person, employer, or health
care provider from being compelled to participate in any health care
system.” You will then be instructed to
vote: “Yes” or “No.” A yes vote will
allow this proposal to become law in the state and be added to the amendments
of the state constitution. By voting
yes, no one will be forced by the federal government to participate I any
health care system, which would limit options and/or force certain procedures
to be followed. By votind no, the
federal government will be able to force the Obama Health Care Act on the state
and we will have to-we must-follow the mandates of that act in the state, thus
taking away our sovereign rights in regards to health care.
Supporters of this amendment
include State Representative Phil Williams commented: “We want the people of
Alabama to know that if we're going to join a program like that we're going to
have it on a ballot and you and me and everyone will be able to vote and decide
if we want to join a national health plan or not."
As for opposition to the
proposed bill, there have been no formal opposition identified.
It is important to understand
that according to Article XVIII of the Alabama Constitution it takes a
three-fifths (60%) vote of the Alabama State Legislature to qualify an
amendment for the ballot. The measure was passed during the last day of 2011
state legislative session, officially sending it to the ballot in 2012 for
public vote.
According to www.blog.al.com and www.ccofal.org a YES vote on November
6 for Amendment 6, the OBAMA Health Care Opt Out proposed bill would prohibit
mandatory participation in any OBAMA Federal health care system. This amendment has the purpose of challenging
the overreaching Obama care and gives citizens legal authority to legally opt
out of mandatory Obama Health Care. A Yes vote is an anti-Obama Vote.
Voters in Alabama, Arizona,
Missouri, Montana and Arizona will be asked to vote on language challenging or
opting out of insurance reforms as outlined in the Obama Affordable Care Act,
including the individual-or employer-mandated coverage.
Alabama voters to have their
say on a proposed constitutional amendment that would prohibit the new federal
health care plan from being enforced in Alabama. The bill by Rep. Blaine
Galliher, R-Gadsden [will] go to voters in a statewide referendum in the next
general election in November 2012,
“It's important for us to
understand that although what we're doing today, I think, is symbolic, when you
look at the federal health care bill there are portions in the bill that in my
mind are going to send health care costs in the state skyrocketing,” he said.
“The general attitude of Alabamians is they do not want this intrusion from the
federal government," he added. Galliher said officials from Blue Cross and
Blue Shield, the largest health insurer in Alabama, have told him the federal
plan would increase its costs by $58 million in 2014, and those costs would be
passed on to consumers. Approval of the bill would lend support, Galliher said,
to Attorney General Luther Strange's lawsuit opposing the federal plan.
My Opinion
While there will be more to
follow on this issue in this blog at a later date, I for one would like to
remind the federal government we are a sovereign state and therefore are not to
told or held captive by them for the health care of our own people.
More to come!

Election 2012 #2
As I share these articles which are a few years old, I pray
they illustrate for you the importance of making your voice count.
Today’s article is one that I hope you will pay close
attention to and be prepared to share with others along the way.
A BreakPoint Commentary
Is It a Sin Not To Vote? : Christians In the Public
Square
Is it a sin not to vote?
That's a question that's been
very much in the news in the wake of the supposed exposé by David Kuo, author
of TEMPTING FATE. Kuo, a former aide to
President Bush, says he became disillusioned when he heard administration
staffers call evangelicals "nuts" and "goofy." He was also bothered that staffers used
political judgments in deciding where to hold briefings. Really?
What administration since George Washington has not considered politics
when scheduling meetings? As for the
"nuts" charge - assuming it's true - well, I've probably used the
same term myself to describe some overly zealous brethren.
Kuo's book is of particular
interest to me because he credits my book KINGDOMS IN CONFLICT with both launching
his political career and warning him about evangelicals in politics. I'm flattered that my writings influenced
David, but he really needs to read my book more closely. And as a Christian who has worked with
President Bush on issues ranging from AIDS to sexual trafficking to slavery in
Sudan to prison rape, all of which the president delivered on, my experience
could not be more different from what David describes.
Does this mean I'm in the
president's pocket? I've met with the
president on numerous occasions and unapologetically consider him my friend,
but he has never once asked me to support him.
Nor has he asked me to endorse him politically, something I wouldn't
do. In fact, I've criticized his
decisions when I've disagreed with them.
If this is what it means to be manipulated, give me more of it!
David Kuo is right, however,
about one thing: Christians involved in politics must maintain their
independence; without that, we play into the hands of those - Republicans and
Democrats - who would use us. Both
parties are doing and saying things to attract so-called values voters. And I say good: I'd like to see Republicans
and Democrats work to protect innocent human life at every stage, stop AIDS,
end the destruction of the family, and take care of prisoners and the poor.
But Kuo is dead wrong to
suggest that that Christians ought to enter into a time of "fasting"
from politics. These words, which I
wrote in 1987, that so influenced David are true today: "Christians need
to influence politics for justice and righteousness." But we must do so "with eyes open, aware
of the snares ... Today Christians may find themselves suspect - I have
experienced this myself - to the very people on whose side they are
fighting. But that is the price they
must pay to preserve their independence and not be beholden to any political
ideological alignment." That's what
I wrote in 1987; that's what I mean today.
Fasting from politics is the
exact opposite of what I taught David Kuo, however. Only by continuing to fight for our beliefs,
regardless of the temptations, compromises, or being called "nuts,"
can we achieve the kind of moral reform and protection of human rights that
Christians throughout the centuries and in every culture work for.
This is why Christians must
never "fast" from politics.
And it's why Christians, of all citizens, ought to be lining up to
vote. Do your civic duty because you'll
do your duty to God in the process.
And to abandon the battle on behalf of the sick and the
suffering, the prisoner and the unborn: That would be a true sin.

Election 2012 #1
Over the next few weeks I will be sharing with you important
articles which I believe show the importance of voting in the upcoming
election. These articles are dated
articles, which deal with some issue related to that time, but as we know
history repeats itself. Therefore I
believe these to be timely and worth our consideration.
You Are Wrong If You Do Not Vote
You are wrong if you do not
vote.
You are to render unto Caesar
the things that are Caesar's. Our Caesar
[in the United States ] is a
government of the people by the people for the people. One vote may make the difference.
In 1645 Oliver Cromwell gained
control of England by one
vote.
In 1649 Charles the First of
England was executed because of one vote.
In 1776 one vote gave America the
native language English rather than the German.
(humor insert: you ought to be glad for that because none of us speak
German). One vote!
In 1839 Marcus Morton was
elected Governor of Massachusetts by one vote.
In 1845 one vote saved
president Andrew Johnson from impeachment.
In 1876 One vote gave
Rutherford B. Hays the presidency of the United
States .
In 1923 ... one vote ... gave
Adolph Hitler the leadership of the Nazi party.
One vote.
I'm only one but I am one. I can't do everything but I can do something
and what I can do I ought to do and that by the grace of God I will do.

I urge you now to make plans to participate in the November
elections. It is vital that we the
people VOTE!

40 Days of Prayer
40 Days of Prayer for Our Nation
“To change lives we
must first be changed. We must pray for
and experience spiritual regeneration, then recognize and accept our
responsibilities as Christians to be salt and light…if were going to have faith
in practice, we’ve got to get the faith right first.”
-Richard
Land
On Friday, September 28, I will
begin an adventure, one that you might want to participate in as well. It will be a soul cleansing, soul searching,
and a soul reviving adventure that I believe will help me personally and will
benefit me more than talking political points and bashing candidates.
As America heads toward the
polls on November 6 there is much to pray for and the next 40 days could be the
very thing to turn all of this around. I
am not praying for a particular candidate or party. I still believe that God is not involved in
partisan politics, therefore I am praying for God’s will and God’s plan in all
things. As God places His desires on the
hearts of men and woman who will go to the polls God’s man will be the man that
becomes president.
The Presidential election is
not the only thing we need to be praying for because there is so much
more. We have troubles with all things
right and just in America today. Our Nation
is experiencing a struggle that is sometimes beyond my ability to think or
reason. America is slowly pushing itself
toward a point of no return. We have
factions attempting to destroy the Sanctity of Human Life, both by proclaiming
abortion and dealing with the aged of society.
We have those who want to destroy traditional marriage, forsake Israel,
give tax payer dollars to terrorist groups, and an economic situation some have
referred to as “The Great Recession.”
My, how we need a spiritual intervention in the world today!
Before you forsake me, casting
my thoughts aside, let me share with you the real thing my 40 Day Journey will
seek. I am seeking revival for our
Nation. As such, I believe that real
revival will begin with me. Someone once
said, “If it is to be, it is up to me.”
With that being the case, then true revival in America will begin in the
lives of those who call themselves Christians.
We will find ourselves praying, as God instructed the people many years
ago.
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and
pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from
heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14 (KJV)
Richard Land, President of the
Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission wrote:
“God has given us a promise that can change America if
enough of God’s people heed the call to live out the Gospel in our time,
shining like stars against the darkness of our culture, reflecting the sunlight
of God’s Son. But that starts with our
willingness to be humbled-to recognize that it’s God’s way or no way. It’s not God and country; it’s God
alone. Only then can God use us-His
people-for His purposes in our land.”
I read with great interest these words: “The United States
is clearly a nation in trouble. A battered economy, political divisiveness, the
culture wars, racial uneasiness, and a sidelined church, provide the dry tinder
for an inflammatory national election in November of 2012. Many stake their
hopes or fears on the outcome. While
believing in and encouraging the importance of exercising our right to vote, we
also call the Christian Church in America to do that which is even more
critical in these days . . . to pray. The seriousness of our day requires an
intensity of prayer that is unprecedented.”
From www.40daysofprayer.net we realize that the
call to prayer is “a call to fervent prayer for our elections. We are in
desperate days as a nation as the spiritual, moral and financial fabric of our
nation is disintegrating around us. Believers need to pray as never before.” This is the reason that “America's National
Prayer Committee and its member organizations are putting out a call to pray 40
days prior to the elections (September 28 - November 6).” Additionally, they vow that their “intent is
to stay far away from anything that looks like an endorsement or movement for
any particular candidate or party. What we are asking for is the intervention
of God on behalf of our nation.”
Through the North American Mission Board and the Ethics and
Religious Liberties Commission, Southern Baptist has issued a call to prayer,
called 40/40. The starting point for
their initiative began on September 26, which will end two days before the
election.
On the www.erlc.com website you find
various issues listed which relate to America and the situations facing
Christians, today. I found the article
by Dr. Barrett Duke (he serves as Vice President for Public Policy and Research
for the Southern Baptist Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission, and also
serves as Director of the Commission’s Research Institute of the ERLC) very
interesting. I have included it here for
you:
In 1798, John Adams, our
country’s second President, said, “Our Constitution was made only for a moral
and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.”
In 2012, the truth of those words is very evident.
Freedom that isn’t guided by a
moral compass runs quickly to license. Today our nation is headed toward a
moral abyss. The permissive attitudes that permeate popular culture have
inserted themselves in individuals, families, and our nation’s policies.
While we can point to many
causes for the current moral dilemma in which our country finds itself. The
real problem is spiritual. The church is failing to reach this present
generation with the gospel. Increasing secularism is the result.
Our nation needs a spiritual
revival that will translate into a cultural renewal. That’s why the Ethics
& Religious Liberty Commission and the North American Mission Board of the
Southern Baptist Convention are sponsoring the 40/40 Prayer Vigil for Spiritual
Revival and National Renewal. This 40 day prayer vigil is intended to help
focus Christians’ attention on God as the true source of help. While much is at
stake in the upcoming election, much more is at stake if the church does not
arise from her spiritual slumber and take more seriously her callings as
witnesses of Christ’s power to save and as culture’s moral compass.
The 40/40 Prayer Vigil
addresses both of these callings. The Vigil begins with a week of prayer
focusing us on own walk with God. Until we experience spiritual revival in our
own lives, we can hardly engage in the kind of heaven shaking prayer we need to
petition our God to be merciful to our nation and give us the leadership we
need. After we invite God to search our own hearts for a week, we begin a
process of intercession for our church, our community, the nation, and the
nation’s leaders.
The Vigil can also be used for
an intensive 40 hour period instead of 40 days. We urge you to consider adding
this crucial spiritual activity to your and your church’s plans this Fall.
While you could begin this period of intercession any time, let me encourage
you to join with thousands of others across the nation by setting aside
September 26 to November 4. In this way you can add your voice to a prayer
crescendo calling on God to pour out His Spirit on His church and this nation
as we prepare to elect our nation’s leaders.
We have prepared a special
prayer guide for this prayer event. It is available for free here. If you would
join us for this important time of prayer, I hope you will register your
commitment at the website as well. It will encourage everyone else who is
praying to know that there are thousands of others joining with them during
that time.
Never before in our lifetimes
has our nation been in a more desperate spiritual state. The place to start to
address that is the throne of grace. May God be pleased to send us revival and
national renewal in response to the poured out prayers of His people.
Therefore, it is imperative that we
join our hearts together. It is time we
reach across the aisles, casting aside the walls and barriers that confine us
and imprison us and pray to the God of Abraham, Jacob and Isaac. May we fall upon our faces and cry out to God
for America during these days before the elections.
I ask that you join me in this
journey and let our voices be heard. If
you will join me, leave a comment here on the blog or on my Facebook wall or
email me. I want to pray for you as we
pray together.
God bless America!
It is estimated that between 20- 40% of evangelical
Christians in this country are not registered to vote.
